Emmermann, Muller-Stockheim U-172 and U-67, mid-Caribbean June 1942

I found it a great challenge to humanize U-boats, which even the men did not live on in port – they were machines designed and utilized for destruction and death. Here is a candid image of two young commanders, Carl Emmermann on the right from U-172 and Gunther Muller-Stockheim of U-67 meeting in the Caribbean Sea while on attack patrol in mid June 1942.
